Synopsis :
Alex, Jane en Suki zijn drie verveelde vrouwen uit New England die door hun echtgenoten in de steek zijn gelaten. Ze wensen dat er een mysterieuze man zal komen die al hun wensen in vervulling laat gaan. Dan verschijnt er een man in het dorp en hij voldoet precies aan de wens van de drie vrouwen. De film noir is duidelijk geĆÆnspireerd op de harde stijl van misdaadromans uit de tijd van de Grote Depressie (eind jaren dertig) van auteurs als Dashiell Hammett, James M. Cain, Raymond Chandler en Mickey Spillane. Vandaar ook dat sommige filmcritici film noir eerder als een subgenre van de misdaadroman beschouwen.

Billy Wilder maakte enkele jaren na Double Indemnicok en The Lost Weekend enkele noirs die niet zozeer krimi s waren, maar eerder satires op de Hollywoodproducties: Sunset Boulevard (1950) en Ace in the Hole (1951).
